The critical thing about this course is the reading which follows the train of thought of the module. Going back to the name of the module (digital cultures) what happens when you put the two words together. What is culture - how might one define it?
Andy: Accumulated knowledge but not necessary everything that gets accumulated in history, because not everything makes it into being culture.
Andrew: Whose knowledge?
Andy: collective knowledge...
Andrew: Where is this knowledge and how do you access it?
Andy: books, a collective subconscious of things remembered
Andrew: so the surrounding culture shapes our identity, some kind of context for everything. This was one of the major conclusions from our first lecture, that everything has a context: people and artifacts.
The other word is digital?
Andy: A bland definition as compared to analogue, whereby digital works by a binary signal, on or off, 1 or 0.
Andrew: So a system of encoding? How do the 1s and 0s operate?
Task: get a simple definition of digital
Whereas culture is all about context, digital numbers don't really have a context.

Critical Reading Must: Pierre Menard by Borges and Walter Benjamin's The Work of Art in an Age of Mechanical Reproduction and Lev Manovich's The Language of New Media and try also Tractatus Logico Philosophicus by Wittgenstein. Here Wittgenstein is trying to describe the universe in words but decides that words just aren't adequate for some things (like God) so we can't talk about it. A very *pure* attempt to do the impossible.

"ACCORDING TO ROLAND BARTHES, all narratives share structural features that each narrative weaves together in different ways. Rather than see this situation as limiting, however, Barthes argues that we should take this plurality of codes as an invitation to read a text in such a way as to bring out its multiple meanings and connotations. Derrida: does the author have any importance to a story?

I'll keep on with the reading from last week - as I got a bit distracted from it by recent events.
It was interesting that Andy got what digital was in a more direct fashion, I seem to remember trying to define what it meant in the context of digital arts and culture which is a challenge in itself and not the actual question.
In regard to that issue.... is the moniker 'digital' now irrelevant as almost everything is digital?
I think I will leave Borges and Walter Benjamin for this week as its not been that long since the last time I read them.
I’ve been starting to think about what I would like to write about for the essay, I guess we can discuss this later on – but at the moment we are covering a lot of analysis of languages (text based and visual / verbal). I think I would like to make some kind of investigation into how Holograms are different to Photographs. Maybe getting somewhere toward an investigation into what is intuitive in the systems of visual language we utilise, and what is a construct. I think it probably needs some analysis. Certainly from the angle I am coming from in my creative practice.
Perhaps I could suggest a few interesting questions (at least they are interesting for me).
Can I be a painter and work entirely in a digital format?
In relation to the blue book (see my blog www.paulscattergood.blogspot.com) -
To what degree is the tangible quality of a ‘digital’ artwork or ‘media object’ important?
Can people really ‘interact’ with screens or do they passively read them despite any level of interaction with a HCI embedded within the computing behind the screen? (if to some extent any object is interactive – Perhaps because of our systems of relating to paintings, pictures and tv/movie screens, is it embedded within western societies cultural consciousness that when one is looking at a screen they believe that they are looking into another world, though a window etc – rather than experiencing an ‘object’ in its own right.
Could you suggest some reading around these ideas?

Yeah, i'm sitting here with Barthes now. Will try and Have Derrida read by next tuesday. Back in the 'e' world - but have to get back to leicester and on with the studies as the course is too fast paced to miss a week. Looking forward to getting back to it all anyway.
